Robust and beautiful Echizen lacquerware is a craft which has been refined over a period of 1,500 years.
Echizen lacquerware also comprises some 80% of the national market for industrial lacquerware production. In recent years, new business avenues have begun to be explored in order to expand demand and spur sales, including the production of an Echizen lacquerware traditional festival cart, the introduction of Echizen lacquerware in school lunches, and the development of home interior goods using Echizen lacquerware.
Echizen lacquerware was awarded the Katsuranomiya Prize, the highest honor offered by the Japan Urushi Ware Federation of Cooperatives, for the fifth straight year at the 50th National Lacquerware Exhibition in 2015, and has received this prize 12 times in total. The preeminence of Echizen as an area which produces surpassing lacquerware has truly been acknowledged nationwide.
