犬追物は、疾走する犬を馬上から射て当たった数を競う競技で、流鏑馬・笠懸とならび「馬上三物」と呼ばれ、武士の弓馬術鍛錬の武技として鎌倉時代以降盛んに行なわれました。こうした画題は古くは土佐派が手掛けたものでした。本作は春の犬追物を描いた新出の図で、土佐光吉系の形態を伝える唯一の例です。また尼崎教育委員会所蔵のものとは人物描写などが共通していることから、本来一双として制作されたと考えられています。 県内個人宅に長く所蔵され、ほとんど公開されることのなかった貴重な作品でしたが、2019年度に当館に収蔵され公開できるようになりました。

"Inuoumono"　Dog Chase Folding Screens

Delve into the dynamic world of Inuoumono, a spirited competition that tests the agility and prowess of hunting dogs as they chase their quarry on horseback. Alongside Yabusame and Kasagake, these three types of horseback archery have thrived since the Kamakura period, serving as a vital martial art for the training of samurai archers.

Traditionally, such themes found expression in the vibrant artworks of the esteemed Tosa school, echoing the martial spirit of bygone eras. However, this particular masterpiece presents a fresh interpretation of the age-old spectacle, rendered with exquisite detail by the skilled hand of Tosa Mitsuyoshi.

Capturing the essence of spring’s vitality, this evocative illustration breathes new life into the art form, offering a unique glimpse into Mitsuyoshi’s artistic vision. Notably, the composition bears striking similarities to a counterpart held by the Amagasaki Board of Education, suggesting a potential pairing between the two works. Previously safeguarded within the confines of a private collector’s residence, this rare gem has now found its rightful place within our museum’s esteemed collection for public appreciation since 2019.

骑马射犬图屏风

骑马射犬是指纵马以弓箭围射奔跑的狗，比拼射中数量的骑射比赛，与流镝马、骑马射斗笠并称为“马上三物”，是武士锻炼弓箭及骑马技艺的武术，在镰仓时代以后十分盛行。这种题材的绘画古时候土佐派画派画得很多。本作品上描绘的是春季的骑马射犬的新出现的图，是展现了土佐光吉一脉形态的唯一一例。此外，本作品与尼崎教育委员会所藏的画作相比，人物描绘上存在共通之处，推测当时一共制作了两架即一对屏风。 本作品长期以来一直珍藏在福井县内一处个人私宅中，几乎未曾公开展出过，十分珍贵。2019年屏风转由本馆收藏才得以面世。
