Yonetani Kiyokazu's "Elevator":
A Journey of Artistic Revelation
Hailing from Fukui, Kiyokazu Yonetani embarked on a transformative artistic journey that
would ultimately redefine the boundaries of Japanese painting. After graduating from Koshi
Prefectural High School, he pursued his passion for the arts at Tama Art University, where he
was immersed in an intellectually stimulating environment under the mentorship of luminaries
such as Misao Yokoyama and Matazou Kayama.
During his tenure at Tama Art University, Yonetani's artistic vision was profoundly influenced by
a pivotal experience in Europe, courtesy of the Yokoyama Misao Scholarship. Confronted with
the mastery of past artistic luminaries, Yonetani grappled with a sense of resignation and
existential doubt. Yet, amidst this existential turmoil, he discovered a renewed passion for
drawing - a fervor that would propel him towards a groundbreaking artistic endeavor.
With unwavering determination, Yonetani embarked on a quest to encapsulate the essence of the
present moment through his artistry. Elevator, a testament to his newfound artistic ethos, made its
debut at the prestigious Nitten Exhibition, where it garnered acclaim as a harbinger of a “new
type of painting.” In this captivating work, Yonetani deftly captures the essence of modernity,
imbuing his creation with a sense of dynamism and vitality that resonates with viewers on a
profound level.
Through Elevator, Yonetani invites audiences to embark on a visual odyssey—an exploration of
the intersection between past, present, and future. With each brushstroke, he challenges the
confines of tradition, offering a glimpse into the boundless possibilities of contemporary
Japanese artistry.
