小コレクター運動

無名芸術家の作品を市民が購入することで活動を支える「小コレクター運動」は、美術評論家の久保貞次郎が提唱したもので、1950年代を中心に全国で展開されました。３点以上の美術品を所有する人を小コレクターと呼ぶ、その活動は福井県で特に盛んで、子どもの創造力育成を目指す運動に共鳴した教員らを中心に行われました。金銭援助だったのが次第に作品を購入するようになり、一般の人たちの草の根の応援により当時無名であった版画家で芥川賞作家の池田満寿夫や、「虹のアーティスト」として知られる美術家靉嘔、現代作家・瑛九（えいきゅう）らの、多くの素晴らしい作品が生み出されることになりました。

The Small Collectors Movement, spearheaded by critic Sadajiro Kubo, emerged as a beacon of support for budding artists, encouraging citizens to invest in the works of unknown talents. Propelled into the national spotlight during the 1950s, this movement gained widespread popularity, igniting a fervor for artistic patronage across the country.
Individuals who amassed three or more artworks earned the esteemed title of small collectors, embodying a collective dedication to nurturing creativity and fostering artistic talent. Nowhere was this movement more fervently embraced than in Fukui Prefecture, where educators championed the cause, recognizing its potential to cultivate the artistic sensibilities of future generations.
What began as a modest form of financial assistance blossomed into a robust culture of art acquisition, driven by the grassroots support of the community. Through the patronage of small collectors, previously unknown artists found a platform to showcase their talents, propelling individuals like Masuo Ikeda - an obscure printmaker turned Akutagawa Prize laureate - and the enigmatic Rainbow Artist Ay-O, and the cutting-edge works of contemporary artists like Ei-Q into the limelight.
