カロは17世紀に活躍したフランスの後期マニエリズムの代表的画家です。43年の短い生涯の内、版画家としての活動時期は、イタリアのフィレンツェで活動した前半期と、フランスのナンシーで活動した後半期に大きく分けられます。 本作は、フィレンツェ時代の特徴をよく表した代表作品のひとつで、前景には、ニ人の人物、 すなわち「パンタロン」 と呼ばれる道化師が、顔をしかめながら踊っているのが描かれています。右側の人物はもう一方に向かって、指を二本突き出す格好をしていますが、これはイタリアで呪いに対する防御的身振りを表します。
