Old Hokuriku Road

Along Awara City’s Old Hokuriku Road, checkpoints, milestones, and other relics of the past remain. Along with Fukui domain’s Hosorogi checkpoint built at the dawn of the Edo Period, mile markers following standard measurements and places of rest were established for travelers.

【Entry Number 13】(Eiheiji Town、Fukui City)

Fukui-Eiheiji Cycling Road

A cycling road links Eiheiji-cho to Fukui City’s Undo Koen, passing by the Naruka Dam along the banks of the Kuzuryu river. Stretching 26km in total, the Eiheiji-Fukui Cycling Road offers cyclists breathtaking views of shibazakura and rapeseed flowers against sweeping natural landscapes.

Wooden Stations of the Fukubu Line

Kitago Station, a stop along the Fukui Railways’ Fukubu Line as it passes through Echizen City, has stood there since it was built in 1924 and remains intact today.

Imajo

The lodgings at Imajo flourished in the past, ideally situated at the juncture of the Nishiomi (through the Kinome Pass) and Higashiomi (through the Tochinokitoge Pass) Highways.

Kono Port

Kono, now part of Minami Echizen-cho, was a major port of call for coastal shipping from the Edo to the Meiji Period. Mansions of ship owners dotted the old mountainside roads, and those that remain today call to mind the town’s boon times.

Imajo-Tsuruga Rail Lines

From Tsuruga City to Minami Echizen-cho, vestiges of the rail lines that supported the prefecture’s growth and development dot the landscape. In Tsuruga City’s Tone area, the Kotone Tunnel, through which the former Hokuriku Main Line ran until 1964, still stands today, its keystone bearing the year of its construction, 1881.

Kumagawa Lodgings

The Wakasa Highway, which joined Obama City with Kyoto’s Demachiyanagi, gained the nickname “Saba (Mackerel) Highway” from its primary role of transporting saba and other fish to Kyoto. Along this major route, the Kumagawa Lodgings, located near Wakasa-cho, thronged with weary travelers in the Edo Period.

Takahama and the Old Tango Highway

Though it originally developed as a transit area for seafood and religious pilgrims, today the area between the Takahama and Wada districts of Takahama-cho that once comprised part of the Tango Highway have become a popular destination for swimmers, brimming with lodgings and homes catering to this industry.

A ride on the Obama Line brings passengers past the Five Lakes of Mikata and Wakasa Bay, through endless fields and forests, and countless other views both soothing and stimulating.
